Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, & Religion: Partnerships for the Future

"Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, & Religion: Partnerships for the Future" was a colloquium held on October, 15 2009 in partnership with the Population Council to encourage dialogue and collaboration among the leaders of international faith-based groups and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) organizations.

The meeting was an opportunity to discuss how partnerships can be developed between faith-based groups and SRHR organizations to effectively and collaboratively address global reproductive and sexual health needs.  The colloquium featured presentations that gave an overview of the issues and the role of both religious and secular organizations in response to improving the lives of girls and women.   We also had the opportunity to learn from examples of existing partnerships between international health and education organizations with faith-based partners such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) initiatives to involve faith-based leaders in their work.

This gathering allowed participants to explore concrete strategies for building bridges between secular and faith-based organizations to address international SRHR issues.  Speakers included: Ibrahim Lethome Asmani, Population Council; Abdelhadi Eltahir, Pathfinder; Debra W. Haffner, Religious Institute; Douglas Huber, Christian Connections for International Health; Azza Karam, UNFPA; Angela Martinez, American Jewish World Services; Fulata Moyo, World Council of Churches; and John Townsend, Population Council.
